Next walk: Shrewsbury Old River Bed and River Severn walk, 10 May 2026

Our May walk takes us to Shrewsbury in Shropshire. It is 6.5 miles (with an option to do a shorter walk of 4.5 miles).

We will start the walk in the town centre and then head out via a residential area to follow the Old River Bed. We will walk across some tracks and fields. Expect these to be muddy in parts, especially if we have had a lot of rain. There are no stiles. Some of the fields may have sheep in them so dogs will need to be kept on a lead here. There are a couple of moderate uphill sections and two lots of steps to go up but generally the walk is an easy one on the flat. There is one busy road to cross.

The walk provides a good view of Shrewsbury’s skyline and spires and there will be an opportunity for a tea break stop after a couple of miles (so please bring a drink and snack).

Approximately four miles into the walk will bring us to Shrewsbury Weir where we will stop for a late lunch. There are several benches here and public toilets. The ‘Weir Café’ sells hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and cakes etc. so there is the choice to buy food from here or to bring your own packed lunch with you to eat.

There is the option to finish the walk after about a ten-minute walk from the Weir lunch stop as we will be passing close by the railway station / start of the walk.

For those wishing to continue we will keep following the River Severn passing under the English Bridge to Greyfriars bridge. There is a very good gelato shop here for people who have left room for some ice-cream for pudding! We might also get to see some rowing boats racing on the river because it is Shrewsbury Regatta day. This will be the busiest section of the walk but the tree-lined avenue here is very wide.

We also have the option to do a loop of Shrewsbury’s famous Dingle garden and from 2pm a brass band will be performing in the Bandstand so if we are lucky we might be able to catch some of this too. There are more public toilets here and another opportunity to buy an ice-cream! The walk then brings us to the Welsh bridge and back to where we began (having passed a total of 8 bridges along the way).
